Here is a timeline of how to go from having never driven a CAR before to passing your driving test, hopefully 1st time

  1. Apply for your Theory Test (introduced in 2001) at http://theorytest.ie/. You can sit your theory test at 16 years of age.
  2. Pass your Theory Test and at 17 years of age apply for your Learner Permit if looking to drive a car.
  3. If your Learner Permit is issued after April 04th 2011 you must undergo Essential Driver Training (EDT) for cars with an Approved Driving Instructor.
  4. You can apply for your driving test 6 months after your Learner Permit was issued as long as you’ve completed all 12 driving lessons of your EDT.
  5. Pass your driving test!

Here is a timeline of how to go from having never ridden a MOTORCYCLE before to passing your driving test.

  1. Apply for your Theory Test (introduced in 2001) at http://theorytest.ie/. You can sit your theory test at 16 years of age.
  2. Pass your Theory Test and at 16 years of age apply for your Learner Permit Category A1 or M if looking to drive a motorcycle / Moped NOT exceeding 125cc.
  3. Pass your Theory Test and at 18 years of age apply for your Learner Permit Category A if looking to drive a motorcycle exceeding 125cc.
  4. If your Learner Permit is issued after December 06th 2010 you must undergo Initial Basic Training (IBT) for motorcycles with an Approved Driving Instructor.
  5. You can apply for your driving test 6 months after your Learner Permit was issued as long as you’ve completed all 16 motorcycle lessons of your IBT.
  6. Pass your motorcycle test!
